why seated · Aristophanes is the second edge-figure candidate and the archive's strongest documented case that authorial identity was obscurable in this exact period and circle. His first three plays were produced under other men's names, he describes the practice himself at Wasps 1017-22, and he continued it after establishing his own — so the civic record carries the producer rather than the poet, and a contemporary prosecution could not fix which man authored the Babylonians. He also stages Chaerephon, and the Suda's entry on Chaerephon is sourced from the scholia to Clouds 144, which places the biographical record downstream of the comic text.
