why seated · Browning is the first term of the constructed-voice series the archive is measuring. The dramatic monologue is the point at which a poem's speaker becomes a position distinct from the poet, with its own history, self-justification and blind spots, and the reader is left to judge across a gap the poet does not narrate. Men and Women (1855) is that practice at full development. It is seated as the baseline against which Pound's personae and Pessoa's heteronyms can be read as later stages of one operation rather than three unrelated eccentricities.
