Whitman rewrote himself across four decades. The seat keeps the editions apart because the difference between the 1855 and the 1891–92 is the evidence, not noise to be merged. The Blue Book is his own 1860 copy, revised by hand: the flat text preserves the apparatus inline — deletions [-…-], additions {+…+}, restorations <…> — so the revising is readable rather than resolved away. Where the encoding offers a regularization, the original is kept.
